Vehicle Safety Inspection Changes Beginning January 1, 2025 for Vehicles Registered in Emissions Counties

While vehicle safety inspections are eliminated for non-commercial vehicles as of January 1, 2025, Johnson County is one of 17 emissions counties where state law will still require a vehicle emissions inspection prior to vehicle registration.

Emissions inspections are required for gasoline powered vehicles 2-24 years old. Diesel powered vehicles and motorcycles are exempt from the emission inspection requirement.

Commercial vehicles in all counties will still be required to obtain a passing safety inspection as well as an emissions inspection prior to vehicle registration.
